Benefit of owning a dog, dogs are good for your heart

Dogs and puppies are good for your heart! According to American Heart Association dogs can help lower your risk of cardiovascular disease. The Center for disease control and prevention, states that dog owners have lower cholesterol and lower blood pressure than non-dog owners.

How do dogs improve our cardiovascular health?

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. Studies have found that owning dogs and puppies (and cats too!) has benefits like:

  • Increased physical activity = lowers weight
  • Lower Systemic blood pressure = lowers the pressure on your blood vessels
  • Improved autonomic tone = activity of the sympathetic (body’s response during perceived threat) and parasympathetic systems (body’s responses while at rest)
  • Improve survival after an acute coronary syndrome = after a heart attack or unstable angina (chest pain during sleeping)
