Teach the drop it commands with a trade:
If your dog has something you don’t want them to have, the thing to do is to trade with your dog for something else. Simply say “Drop It” and then present your trade. Make sure what you are trading is equal or higher value to your dog. You can’t do a change if your dog is holding a package of bacon and you are trying to trade for a toy.
How to get your dog to give up an object?
Playing fetch is less fun when your dog refuses to give you the ball, and wresting any object out of your dog’s mouth can be dangerous and is definitely an undesirable position to be in. Teaching your dog the “Drop It” command can come in handy those situations.
When first teaching your dog “Drop It” it is absolutely important to give the object back to your dog. Doing a trade works great if your dog has something you don’t or can’t give back to him. If you are constantly taking things from your dog, he will learn to run away from you so that you don’t take his treasures away!
Until your dog has better impulse control and is house trained, do not leave anything out that you don’t want your dog to get a hold of. You might have to supervise your dog at all times, if you cannot, he should be in a crate or approved doggy spot where he can’t get into anything.
